„Oktoberfest Sevens“ Rugby Tournament
The biggest one-day sevens tournament on mainland Europe with a long tradition
Winners 2019
Retrospective 2019
Date: September 21st, 2019
In 2019 the annual “Oktoberfest Sevens” Seven Rugby Tournament will take place on the first Oktoberfest Wiesn weekend. The Olympic version of rugby with only seven players per team on a normal rugby field is an ideal tournament format and extremely attractive for spectators: bell runs, hard tackles, many points and many games in quick succession – a game lasts just 2×7 minutes.
For 41 years a big party – the Oktoberfest Sevens
This largest one-day Sevens tournament on the European mainland has a long tradition. Since its humble beginnings on 22.09.1979 with just four teams, the tournament has become an integral part of the tournament calendar. Today the tournament is organized for 32 participating teams. In the women’s relay up to twelve teams compete, in the men’s relay up to 24 teams.
What makes the tournament so special is that the city literally vibrates during the Oktoberfest season. Teams from all over the world celebrate the best sport in the world for one day. And after the tournament day, teams, fans and supporters have time to stroll across the Wiesn.
This year there will also be the best teams in the world to see. In the Olympic Stadium, in the immediate vicinity of our tournament, the #Pro Tournament of the Oktoberfest Sevens will be held on 21 and 22 September. Besides host Germany, top teams like Ireland, Australia, England and South Africa have already confirmed their participation. The highlight: We will play the finals of ladies and men in front of the big crowd in the Olympic Stadium.
We offer discounted tickets for all registered teams.
The game is played in the morning in groups of four teams. In the women’s event, all participating teams will play a qualifying round in the afternoon, in the men’s event, a cup (“Cup”) and a consolation round (“Plate”) will be played. Thus, all teams can enjoy up to seven matches during the tournament day.
The women’s and men’s finals will be played against the backdrop of the Oktoberfest Sevens Pro tournament in the neighbouring Olympic Stadium.
This year will again see a mix of ambitious club and university teams, together with social sides more focused on the fun and joy of our sport. We count many of the squads as being “regular customers“; some of the teams include players whose fathers already played the Oktoberfest Sevens during their active days. In addition to sides from Munich and surroundings, south Germany and the rest of the Federal Republic, this year’s roster will also field squads from Austria, Liechtenstein, France, Italy, England, South Africa and New Zealand.
Venue: „Zentrale Hochschul-Sportanlage – ZHS“ of the Technical University of Munich
Also this year, the tournament will take place on the grounds of the Central University Sports Facility (ZHS) of the Technical University of Munich. The ZHS offers ideal conditions and a perfect infrastructure. This applies both to the four closely spaced playing fields and to our food court in the immediate vicinity.

There will most probably be an Old Boys’ tournament at the same day of the Oktoberfest Sevens Classic. We encourage your team therefore to take part in this Oktoberfest Golden Oldies (OGO) Tournament. Nevertheless, participation of an Old Boys’ team to the tournament is not strictly forbidden (no maximal age of participants). If you are interested to field a team at the OGO, please let us know on oktoberfest7s@munich-rugby.de.
The tournament is opened for players above 18 years old (consequently no U15, U17 teams).
On Friday before the Oktoberfest Sevens there is an Old Boys’ tournament. We encourage your team therefore to take part in this Oktoberfest Golden Oldies tournament. Nevertheless, participation of an Old Boys’ team to the tournament is not strictly forbidden (no maximal age of participants).
When looking back on the participation of past years tournament, different types of teams entered the tournament: from “on-tour” teams aiming to join sport during the tournament and fun during Octoberfest, to good level teams who want to evaluate their performances by encountering teams of their level. We try to adapt the game schedule in such a way that types of teams enjoy the tournament and achieve their sport-related objectives.
This question is mainly asked from teams who definitively enter in the final and who want to prepare their teams according to their potential opponents. It is quite difficult to make up in advance the definitive game schedule, because it is not seldom that teams inscribe in the last days, and some teams simply do not appear on Saturday morning due to unexpected beer consumption on the previous Friday night… Therefore we have to be each year very flexible to set up the game schedule. Nevertheless, we will do our best to provide as much information as possible (already inscribed teams, number of pools, …).
see previous question.
According to WORLDRUGBY rules, each team is limited to a maximum 12 participants for the whole tournament.
No, the Oktoberfest Sevens tournament takes place outside of the regular German Rugby Board’s Leagues.
